Educational Outreach

With an annual estimated attendance of over 6,500 participants, FMM’s Educational Outreach Series is designed to reach a wide number of people with culturally diverse and accessible performances that reflect the groups and cultures that make our city so diverse. Presenting on its own or in collaborative initiatives, these programs are designed to positively impact not only children and youth but the adults who make decisions that affect these groups. Programs include Music That Should Be Danced: World Edition, Salsa y Salud (both at the Miller Outdoor Theater), Navidad Latina (at the MFA), Music for Peace (at the Rothko Chapel), Lecture Series (done at universities and other educational entities); these all free to the public. The now international Robert Avalon Competition for Composers continues its educational mission by providing a platform for composers from around the world and ages, to have their works evaluated and critiqued by well respected judges and has now become Houston’s most important contemporary or modern music event of the year.
